MINNESOTA FALL MEETING UPDATE |
Fall Meeting presented by AHEAD and PGA National Resort & Spa
Section Executive Director Jon Tollette welcomed those in attendance and thanked AHEAD and local representative Patrick
Lang for support of the meeting. Lang spoke on behalf of AHEAD. Tollette also thanked PGA National Resort & Spa for their support.
President John Vallerie and CEO Tom Ryan of the MGA provided an update to the membership on programs involving the
MGA in 2007 including Play Golf Minnesota Week, Regional Clinic Days, MGA's website, local golf coverage,
allied association relationships, and the new Economic Impact Study.
District 8 Director Michael Zinni updated those in attendance on the PGA of America programs including the
status of the industry and possible changes in the PGM program. Zinni also discussed Coyote Springs and PGA Golf Club in Florida.
Midwest Career Consultant Mike Kenney discussed the new compensation survey and asked for support of it. Kenney also discussed trends in the employment area.
Bill Taffe from Golf Access discussed the Minnesota PGA Golf Partners program and benefits of the program to members.
Taffe also stressed the importance of Section Facility and member involvement.
Josh Storms of Northwestern Mutual Financial discussed Disability Insurance with Section Members.
Jeff Drimel announced the 2007 Minnesota PGA Award winners including the Steve Weidner Award winner Larry Nelson and the Golf Professional of the Year Mike Malone.
Committee Updates
Education Committee Chair Doug Nelson updated those in attendance on activities including the education seminar with Mike Kenney
and Henry Delozier. Nelson also discussed an assistant's forum on November 19th and 2008 Spring meeting education activities. Committee
member Keith Kalny discussed the Section Apprentice Orientation Program.
Growth of the Game Committee Chair Lori Money updated those in attendance on the Section's Growth of the Game initiatives.
Those initiatives included the Play Golf Minnesota Week, Special Olympics Pro-Am, Used Club Promotion, and
PGA of America programs. Ed Heil of StoryTeller Media and Communications provided support on the
Play Golf Minnesota Week, 2008 PSA's, and 2007 Media numbers.
Dates of the 2008 Play Golf Minnesota Week are April 29 – May 4.
Junior Golf Committee Co-Chair Steve Fessler updated those in attendance on the Junior Golf Committee and its
programs from 2007. Fessler discussed issues with golf course etiquette and assured those would be a high
priority for the 2008 program. Fessler also thanked those facilities who host events for the program, and the staff for their efforts.
Public Relations Co-Chair Joel Burger updated those in attendance on the success of StoryTeller Media & Communications
support of the Section, which included Play Golf Minnesota Week and Media Day. Burger also provided a handout on ways to use the PGA Logo.
Tournament Chair Todd Kueppers updated those in attendance on the Tournament Committee, asked to have members
complete a survey on the SPC, and introduced representatives Tammy Barboni and Shannon Pederson from
RSM McGladrey to discuss the McGladrey Team Championship. Kueppers also acknowledged the efforts of
Darren DeYoung and the 2008 tournament schedule.
Officer Reports
Secretary Paul Kelley welcomed new members to the Minnesota Section and gave a membership report.
Vice-President Jeff Drimel acknowledged the financial reports of the Section. Topics highlighted included Section Partners Program,
Investment Programs and Foundation support from Junior Golf and Edinburgh USA Pro-Am:
President Kathy Swanson discussed Section activities such as Play Golf Minnesota Week, Special Olympics
relationship, and allied association relationships. Swanson also thanked the Board of Directors, Committees, staff, and her facility and family for all the support.
Section Executive Director Jon Tollette discussed delivery of programs, both national and sectional, through the
communication tools provided (Website, E-news, and Newsletter). Tollette also thanked the 35 companies that supported
section programs through sponsorship in 2007 and asked for those in attendance to continue to support those individuals and
companies. Tollette also thanked the Board of Directors, Committees, event hosts and staff for their efforts.
Four Section Board of Director's positions were up for election. Nick Wimer of Dakota Winds was elected Northern Minnesota Director,
Keith Kalny of StoneRidge Golf Club was elected Metropolitan Director, and Chris Foley of Maddens Resort and Lori Money of Rush Creek
Golf Club were elected as At-Large Directors. All positions were two-year terms.
Open Forum topics included Section Awards Process, PGA and MGA Rules workshops as 2008 is a rules change year,
and the USGA Women's Open. Kathy Swanson also congratulated Sam Emerson for his award as the individual who gave the most lessons for PGA's Free Lesson month.
