MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT March 2008
Dear Minnesota/Dakotas Section PGA members and fellow professionals,
There is light at the end of the tunnel with spring right around the corner and your Section Committees and Board of Directors
have been very busy during the off-season serving you. I am really looking forward to the Spring Meeting at Golden Valley Golf &
Country Club, because it will be quite informational. There is still time to register for the meeting and the educational component
for the day. This will be one day that you do not want to miss.
This fall our Section will be voting in a new Secretary. If anyone would like to be considered please contact Jon Tollette at
the office and he will help you through the process. If anyone has any question about the time commitment as an officer or any other
questions, please feel free to contact Jeff Drimel, Paul Kelley or myself, as we would be more than happy to discuss it with you.
The PGA of America will also be electing a new Secretary at November's PGA of America Annual Meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona. The two
candidates are Ted Bishop from the Indiana Section and Ted O'Rourke from the New Jersey Section. Two years ago our Section supported
Ted Bishop and he has asked for our Section support again this year. He is a very knowledgeable about every aspect of the National
Committees and has a great pulse on the PGA of America. Our board will make a decision at the next Board of Directors meeting on who
our Section would like to support. If anyone has any questions, concerns or comments about the candidates, please feel free to
contact me or any other Board Member to share your thoughts. Information on both candidates can be found at their websites, Ted Bishop and Ted O'Rourke.
Many thanks to all who volunteered your time as a Board Member or a Committee Member. Your hard work has made a positive difference
in our Section activities and created a very exciting time for the Section.
We hear the saying, "time flies when you're having fun". I have only two meetings left as your president and I am so proud of all the
hard work that every single professional has done to better the game of golf and to keep the public informed that when it comes to golf in
the North Dakota, South Dakota or Minnesota, our PGA Professionals are leading the way. Let us continue to reach out to local businesses
and imprint the PGA Professional as the person to go to for golf. Go overboard with customer service and making the golfer feel special,
build on relationships, or create new ones.
I look back and after serving for the past 5 years as a Section Officer and 6 years as the Metropolitan Director and even prior to that
many years as Co-Chair for the Junior Golf Committee and I would have never done it differently. I have met many great people and top
notch PGA Professionals. One thing that stands out in my mind is that anything is attainable in our Section if we all work together as a team.
Great ideas, concepts and plans are created by meeting together and envisioning change. We are always looking for people to join the
Committees that are creative and think outside the box.
There are many things our Section can be proud of and one of those things is our joint effort in "PLAY GOLF MINNESOTA" with the MGA.
The two leading forces of golf in this area, are working together to send the positive message that golf is a great game. Another item
that our Section can be proud of is our very own MINNESOTA PGA PARTNERS CARD. We will talk in depth about the card and its significance
to our Section at the Spring Meeting. We have one of our very own PGA members, Tim Jochim, working with Golf Access on promoting and
selling the card. Give him a call if you need more information, but most of all to help support one of your very own PGA programs.
I hope everyone spends these last few days of the off season with family and friends and enjoy every minute. I am looking forward to
seeing many professionals at the Spring Meeting on March 31st at Golden Valley Golf & Country Club and communicating all the Section's
objectives and projects that are underway. Remember, if you have any old or used golf clubs we will be collecting them at the door and
George Reynolds will then give the clubs to local area schools to use in their golf programs.
See you at Golden Valley Golf & Country Club on March 31st.
Kathy Swanson, PGA/LPGA
