Tom Vizina of Oaks GC defeated Dan Callahan at his home course Island View GC 3&2 to win the Minnesota PGA Senior Match Play Championship. Vizina also ousted top-seed Dale Jones in the semifinals this morning 2&1 on his way to his first Senior Match Play title. This is his first victory in a senior event since his Senior Open title at Minnesota Valley CC back in 2015.
Vizina, who never trailed in the semifinals or finals, has proved to be a tough out in any match play formatted event within the Section.
“I normally am a difficult out in match play. This is my fourth match play championship final,” emphasized Vizina. “I think that’s because I can keep the ball in play. I drive it well and make a lot of pars which forces my opponents to make birdies.”
He got his first lead in the final match with a birdie at the par-3 4th—one of only two birdies in the final match. The two would exchange bogeys and holes at the 6th and 7th before making the turn with Vizina 1-up.
Callahan showed some fight winning the par-3 11th, but he couldn’t make a run as Vizina would win 13, 14 and 16 in route to the victory 3&2.
“It is so fun to be able to come out and play with these guys,” Vizina said. “After I qualified for the national Senior PGA Professional Championship, I have finally taken the time to work on my game, and it is great to see that it’s paying off. I’m hitting the ball really well right now, so I’m very excited to get to Florida and play.”
Vizina will join four other Section members at the Senior PGA Professional Championship at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. on October 25-28, 2018.
